For the 2019-2020 school year, this program will be offered twice daily on Monday and Tuesday mornings. We recommend you plan a visit with a buddy teacher from your school.

By the end of this field trip program students will be able to:
  • identify specific adaptations that allow redwoods to survive well in their environments

  • use evidence collected to construct an explanation of how redwoods survive in their coastal environments

About the Program

How are coastal redwoods able to grow so tall and live for so long when most other trees can't? As scientists, students solve the mystery of these giant trees. Through investigation rotations, students collect evidence of redwood adaptations. Each station provides an elevated hands-on experience through a series of scientific skills. By comparing redwoods with pine, students can identify how resilient redwoods are with pests, fire and in their coastal environment. Through turn and talks and facilitated discussions, students discover what is so unique about these giants and the environments we share with them.
